Katie Korotzer’s non-representational paintings and sculpture use gestural mark-making, the language of color, and the interaction of shape, texture and negative space to express movement and emotion. Her work recalls the dual possibilities of containment and freedom. Layers of color and texture express the emotional and physical sensation of moving between different places. Korotzer asks herself questions about the possibilities that are available, or not, in these spaces.

Curiosity and courage are the two impulses that drive Korotzer to begin new work. As she develops each piece she seeks to uncover the personal, family and historical structures that have both benefited and limited her. Through this process her goal is to increase self-understanding and continue building empathy for others.

Korotzer has strong connection to the materials of art making and often uses her hands to apply paint and graphite to the surface. The inherent qualities of raw canvas, paper, paint, ink and graphite contribute their own honesty to the work.

About the Artist: Katie Korotzer is a painter and art writer living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area.
