Inspired by the work of Irving Penn, 32° Beautiful, Flowers in Freeze Frame is Needham's attempt to make interesting pictures, not take pictures of interesting things. Her belief is that taking a photograph of a flower is just too easy and that taking credit for capturing what is already beautiful is lazy. Because of their intrinsic nature, she feels flowers demand more of the photographer.
The process of selecting, freezing and photographing a flower is extremely open to chance. There’s a playfulness and a spontaneity to the whole endeavor that Needham responds to and feels that like life, despite one’s best efforts one really has no way of knowing how things are going to turn out.
