About Us

Ground was born out of the design minds of longtime friends Beth LaDove and Caitlin McVarish, whose creative collaborations have spanned the globe from California to Europe and back again. With Ground, they offer their vision of ideal California living, coordinating indoor and outdoor spaces in ways that increase the beauty and utility of both. Their new showplace functions as a shop, a garden, and a meeting place for aesthetic exploration and expression.

Set in a former nursery, Ground features 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space styled with gorgeous plants and house goods, including textiles, ceramics, apothecary, and tableware curated with an emphasis on natural material, local and international makers, and ethical sourcing. In addition to its retail component, Ground offers a full schedule of workshops and events, and serves as headquarters for its founders’ landscape design and styling businesses.

“Our goal is to help our customers make their living spaces more beautiful and more comfortable, a perfect fit for their lives. That might happen through buying a handcrafted bowl, or taking a class on natural dyeing, or having us design a new backyard for them. We literally cover a lot of ground.”

Meet the Proprietors

Ground Proprietors

Beth LaDove: Passionate about plants (& natural beauty)

Beth brings strong ideas about design, presentation and the natural environment to the ethos of Ground. Creative Director & filmmaker turned landscape designer, she has three decades of experience creating beautiful visual experiences and environments. “My spirit animal is a pair of pruning shears,” she jokes. “Whether I’m sourcing the perfectly proportioned tree or putting in an outdoor living room, the same process is playing out, and it’s basically about figuring out what can go, what must stay, and how to arrange the elements that make the cut for maximum beauty, clarity, and meaning.”

Caitlin McVarish: The textile guru (& power shopper)

Caitlin brings her love of color, pattern, texture and design into everything she chooses for Ground. A California native, Caitlin has worked in the fashion industry doing textile design and production and in the interior design industry sourcing luxurious hand-knotted rugs. Now, she’s applying her curatorial eye to Ground, which she’s stocking with unique objects from local makers and international artisans alike. “I’m always looking for the kind of special items that I would use and treasure in my own home,” she says. “It's just that at Ground, I get to do that on a wider scale.”
