Paula Valenzuela’s mixed media abstract paintings explore the interconnection of conscious and unconscious aspects in our lives--the complexity of personality, that which we show to others and that we keep to ourselves, and the interplay of darkness and light within us.
Her inspiration comes from the textures and colors found in nature, especially the desert, the skies and the collective symbols used by ancient cultures. Valenzuela's process is almost archeological. Using a combination of paint, collage, and mixed media, she builds many layers and then excavates into them, bringing the hidden history to the surface. Textures, color, and organic forms are woven into a complex visual dialogue that hints at the underlying feelings and complexity of our lives.
About the Artist: Originally from Chile, Paula Valenzuela is a mixed media artist located in the Bay Area. She was interested in art from an early age and 15 had begun studying with many Chilean artists. But her academic studies eventually led her to pursue a professional career in Clinical Psychology and Public Health, while keeping her art as a more private passion. When Valenzuela moved to the US in 2013 she reclaimed her art practice and now, art is her own therapy, self-discovery, and way to connect with the local community.
